EDMONTON POLICE COMMISSION ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF 2 NEW MEMBERS

 

In January 2022, the EPC will welcome its newest members appointed to the Commission by City Council, Irfan Chaudhry and Shazia Amiri.

Irfan Chaudhry is currently the Director in the Office of Human Rights, Diversity, and Equity at MacEwan University and leads the development of human rights, diversity, and equity initiatives within the institution. He has held numerous roles within the EDI space including project leadership positions with the City of Edmonton’s Racism Free Edmonton project and the Edmonton Local Immigration Partnership; advisory positions with the Edmonton Police Service Chief of Police Diversity Recruitment Committee and Chief of Police Community Advisory Committee; the Alberta Hate Crimes Committee, as well as committee roles with Public Safety Canada’s Expert Committee on Countering Radicalization to Violence. He also serves as Vice President for the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination in Higher Education, and on the Public Safety Canada in the Expert Committee on Countering Radicalization to Violence.

Shazia Amiri is a Registered Social Worker and throughout her career, she has worked in various non-profits agencies, such as E4C, Boyle McCauley Health Centre, and Boyle Street Community Services as well as with the Edmonton Police Service working collaboratively with members on the Heavy Users of Service (HUoS) project. She has worked for the Government of Alberta since 2015 within the Ministry of Community and Social Services for the AISH program and Disability Services (PDD & FSCD) and currently, for the Ministry of Children’s Services. She has held various positions including working with high risk youth, completing community assessments, as well as completing investigations for children in care.

Both Irfan and Shazia bring diverse perspectives and unique skill sets to the Commission and will be formally introduced at the next public meeting on January 20, 2022.
