EDMONTON POLICE COMMISSION EXTENDS CHIEF’S CONTRACT

The Edmonton Police Commission is pleased to announce that they have extended Chief McFee’s contract to June 30, 2026.

The Edmonton Police Commission has negotiated a two-year and five-month extension to the Chief’s original contract which was to expire in January 2024.

Chief McFee is an internationally recognized innovator and executive leader in the field of policing and had led the Edmonton Police Service through a strategic organizational review and restructuring of existing resources.

These changes have ensured that the EPS is a modern police service that supports community safety while reducing crime, disorder and victimization. The Chief’s vision for the future articulated through Vision 2020 and the formation of the Community Safety & Well-Being Bureau (CSWB) have bolstered areas of strength within EPS and have established a solid foundation for reducing demand for service by creating pathways for individuals off the arrest/remand/release cycle.

Details on Vision 2020 can be found at: https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/AboutEPS/Vision2020

Vision 2020 included 75 recommendations and some of the projects outlined are still in their infancy and require more time to ensure they are implemented successfully. Additionally, 2020 and 2021 have been challenging years with demands on resources from the pandemic and social movements around police reform and calls for defunding that have placed time constraints on the ability to roll out each recommendation effectively.

Chief McFee’s efforts in modernization and driving change in policing has impressed the Commission as well attracted attention nationally for its forward thinking and outcome focused agenda. We are proud of what the Chief has achieved as well as the way in which he has collaborated with community partners to create systems, both within the community and policing, that establishes foundations that will lead the way in the long term to a safer and more inclusive city. The Commission felt that this level of achievement needed to be recognized with a contract extension and to ensure his presence in Edmonton over the long term to continue to drive his positive vision for the future.

“There is a lot more to do and we wanted to ensure we secured Chief McFee as we journey down this path of continuous improvement for the Service and the residents of Edmonton”, states Commission Chair, Micki Ruth.
