All remaining 2026 public meetings of the Edmonton Police Commission will be held virtually and without public speakers.
The public is invited to attend the September 17, October 22 and November 19 meetings through Zoom. Virtual public meeting links and agenda packages are published and distributed one week prior to the next meeting.
Discourse surrounding the Commission has moved far beyond legitimate criticism of the board, police governance or oversight. It has devolved into personal attacks, defamation, threats, and intimidation directed at Commissioners, police service members, staff, and other members of the public. These actions are damaging, harmful and personal. They do not represent constructive public dialogue or a safe work environment, and they will no longer be tolerated.
The Commission cannot stand by while individuals engage in actions and behaviour that seek to purposefully intimidate public servants or individuals and communities who do not share their views on topics that are not within the mandate of the board. Public feedback was abusive and insulting over several months, and as a result, the Input from the Public item been removed from future public meeting agendas. The Commission will continue to accept written correspondence from the public that is related to the board’s mandate only.
These are intended as temporary measures while the Commission reviews its meeting procedures and considers its rules and policy around oral input from the public. The Commission will revisit its decision to meet virtually and suspend public speakers before next year.
