Commissioners represent the general public and are encouraged to attend functions and network throughout the community to maintain strong relationships with individuals and groups within the City of Edmonton.
Guidelines:
- Commissioners are entitled to payment or reimbursement for travel and other associated costs related to attending special functions in accordance with EPC policy 5.7 – Expenses.
- All Commissioners are encouraged to attend the following functions:

- Edmonton Police Service Regimental Ball
- Edmonton Police Association Retirement and Awards Banquet
- Alberta Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Event

- In the event a commissioner cannot make an event they have confirmed they would be attending, then that Commissioner must make every effort to find another Commissioner to replace them.
- Barring extraordinary circumstances, as approved by the Chair, the Commission will not pay for no-shows or last-minute cancellations.
- Appropriate discretion must be applied when a commissioner attends an event as a private citizen. Should a commissioner be uncertain about attending a specific event as a private citizen, then the Commission Chair and/or ED should be consulted.
Procedures:
- The Executive Director (ED) will give advance notice, as soon as practicable, of events and functions that the Commission has been invited to for scheduling purposes.
- The ED will ensure each notification and calendar invite to commissioners includes the nature of the event, expectations or duties of commissioners in attendance, and if the invitation includes the opportunity to speak or present at the event.
- If the event or function includes an invitation for a Commission representative to speak, then the ED will ensure that speaking notes are prepared in advance.
