As set out in section 3(8) of Alberta’s Police Conduct and Oversight Regulation (Regulation), the Edmonton Police Commission (Commission) may extend a probationary period if it is necessary or beneficial in the circumstances.
Guidelines:
- The Chief of Police (Chief) shall refer a request for a probationary period extension to the Commission prior to the expiry of the probationary period or any previous extensions.
- Where a probationary period extension is referred to the Commission for decision, the Commission will determine if it believes an extension is necessary or beneficial in the circumstances.
- Each probationary period extension granted by the Commission shall not exceed six months.
Procedures:
- Probationary extension requests will be placed on a Commission agenda for discussion and decisions will be noted in the minutes.
- The Chief shall refer a decision on a probationary period extension to the Commission under section 3(7) by submitting a request that contains the following information:
- Whether the Edmonton Police Service (Service) tried to come to an agreement with the officer subject to the extension request pursuant to section 3(6);
- The length of extension request being sought, and;
- An explanation of why the extension request is necessary or beneficial in the circumstances.
- The Commission’s Legal Counsel shall review the request and seek additional information as deemed necessary from the Chief and bring the request forward to the Commission.
- The Commission will provide a letter to the Chief confirming or denying each request.
