Today, City Council appointed Coun. Karen Principe to the Edmonton Police Commission for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2027.
Coun. Principe replaces outgoing Coun. Jo-Anne Wright, who served as a commissioner since Jan. 1, 2024. Coun. Wright is thanked for her service to Edmontonians and contributions to police governance and oversight over the past two years. Coun. Anne Stevenson was also re-appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2027.
Coun. Principe was first elected to represent Ward tastawiyiniwak in 2021. She lived in Winnipeg and Toronto before settling in Edmonton in 1998. She has been a resident of ward tastawiyiniwak with her husband for 23 years, and an active member of the community, volunteering at Kilkenny Playschool, Evansdale School, and St. John Bosco School where her three children previously attended. As a family, the Principe’s enjoy volunteering at the Edmonton Food Bank and the Edmonton Christmas Bureau. Coun. Principe is proud to support north Edmonton’s ward tastawiyiniwak as a member of City Council and as a part of the decision-making process.
Coun. Stevenson was first elected to represent Ward O-day’min in 2021. She went on to obtain an undergraduate degree in international development and economics at Trent University, and went on to complete a master’s degree in city design at the London School of Economics. After ten years of working and traveling abroad, Coun. Stevenson returned to her hometown of Edmonton in 2012. She spent seven years working at the City of Edmonton and volunteering on affordable housing and social research initiatives. In 2019, she joined Right at Home Housing Society, where she worked to provide affordable housing solutions to meet the diverse needs of the community before being elected to City Council.
Coun. Wright was first elected to represent Ward Sspomitapi in 2021. She was born and raised in Edmonton and continues to reside in Edmonton’s southeast. Jo-Anne has been a lifelong community builder, volunteering her time to local organizations including the Meadows Community League board. Coun. Wright holds a Bachelor of Human Resources and Labour Relations, and prior to being elected she spent the majority of her career working in the financial service industry. Coun. Wright is honoured to serve as a commissioner, and as a councillor representing Edmonton’s southeast and continue her work building strong communities.
